Wildfire Smoke

WWYD Wednesday

Wildfire smoke has moved into your area. The sky is hazy and air-quality alerts are active. Some people stay inside or wear N95s; others continue as usual.

WWYD: check the Air Quality Index, change outdoor plans, wear a respirator, or keep your routine? What information would help you decide?

Fact Check Friday

Smoke can travel far beyond the fire. Fine particles can reach deep into the lungs, and children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with heart or lung conditions face greater risks.

Check local air-quality information. Close windows, limit outdoor activity when air is unhealthy, and use indoor filtration such as a HEPA purifier. Use HVAC recirculation when appropriate.

If you must be outside in unhealthy smoke, a well-fitting N95 offers better protection than a cloth or surgical mask. Recognize the hazard and prepare before the air turns gray.
